Ratings

Taste 9/10

I tried gold standard in the flavor double rich chocolate. The flavor overall is great. It's light and doesn't leave any aftertaste of unpleasant film behind that some other brands like protein powders formulated for people on a plant-based diet would generally opt for.

Texture/Solubility (i.e. “how well does it dissolve in liquid?”) 10/10

This protein blend is very smooth, with no gritty texture. The serving size is one scoop, creating a thinner shake that's easy to drink quickly and has a higher water content, which helps with hydration. ON's Gold Standard is made from a very fine powder, so it dissolves well in liquid and stays emulsified throughout.

Ingredients 7/10

While we all have good intentions, sometimes reading the ingredients can feel a bit pointless. Most of the time protein powders are filled with ingredients we've never heard of, can't pronounce, and have no idea what they do. Don't worry, I've broken down some of the complex ingredients and added the simplest explanations I could below:

Whey Protein Isolate: This starts as Whey Protein Concentrate, but is has a higher percentage of the lactose and fat removed.

Whey Protein Concentrate: In the shortest terms possible, this is the liquid part of milk that separates when the milk is heated. It's then dried to remove the water content and you're left with a highly potent powder containing all 9 essential amino acids.

Hydrolyzed Whey Protein: After the milk is curdled and strained, this is the remaining liquid.

So far, we're at a lot of milk being separated so the manufacturer can pull out the most significant parts, while removing what they deem unnecessary (like fat and lactose). Let's continue, because this next section is where things get a little weird.

Natural and Artificial Flavors: Natural flavors are extracted from plants and animals. Artificial flavors are created in a lab. Unfortunately, all we as consumers get to know is that there are both categories of flavors added. We don't get to know where those flavors derive from.  They can range anywhere from animal secretions to abominations created by mad men in lab coats.

Sunflower and/or Soy Lecithin: To start, I find it odd that this is listed as an and/or situation. Sunflower Lecithin is primarily an emulsifier. However, it also has a plethora of health benefits like protecting gastrointestinal lining. Soy Lecithin (also an emulsifier) is high in estrogen, but can also aid in digestion.

Sunflower Oil: High in vitamins and contains healthy fats.

Maltodextrin: A plant-based starch commonly found in processed foods. Created by heating starches at a high enough level which causes them to separate from other components. It's also plant-based, gluten-free, and vegan.

Modified Food Starch: Helps prevent caking and stabilizes food products.

Dipotassium Phosphate: Another emulsifier and stabilizer.

Tricalcium Phosphate: Prevents caking

Tocopherois: In short, this is a preservative.

Salt

Cocoa Powder

Acesulfame Potassium: An artificial sweetener.

Sucralose: Another sweetener.

Macros (i.e. the ratio between protein/carbs/fats) 9/10

The macros in Optimum Nutrition are truly top tier. In just one scoop, you get 24 grams of whey protein, including whey protein isolate, along with 2 grams of fat, 3 grams of carbohydrates, and 2 grams of sugar. Additionally, it offers a small boost of potassium and calcium, all within just 120 calories.

Value (i.e. “Is it worth it for the price?”) 10/10

At $1.19 per serving, Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard offers great value. Its macro ratio helps you maintain a balanced diet without extensive meal prep, making it ideal for weight management and meeting your daily protein intake goals.
